How Often Should You Book a Massage?

How often should you have a massage?

After, “Ooh, can you sort my shoulders out please?!”, this is one of the most common questions people ask me when they find out I’m a massage therapist:

How often should I have a massage?

And the honest answer is: it depends.

It depends on your body, your lifestyle, your stress levels, your budget, your health, and what you want from the treatment. Some women book massage as an occasional treat. Others find it helpful as part of a regular wellbeing routine.

There is no perfect rule that suits everyone.

At Suffolk Massage Therapy, my aim is to help you choose a rhythm that feels realistic, supportive, and right for you. Massage should not feel like another pressure on your to-do list. It should feel like something that helps you pause, reset, and care for your body in a way that fits your life.

If you want relaxation and time to yourself

If your main reason for booking is relaxation, you may choose to have a massage once a month, every six weeks, or whenever life starts to feel particularly full.

For many women, a regular monthly massage can be a helpful way to create space for themselves before they reach the point of complete exhaustion.

This may suit you if:

  • You feel busy or mentally overloaded

  • You rarely take time for yourself

  • You want something calming to look forward to

  • You enjoy gentle or medium pressure

  • You want to support your general wellbeing

  • You need help switching off from work, family, or daily responsibilities

A Swedish massage, Lava Shells massage, Indian head massage, or facial treatment may be especially suitable if your goal is rest, calm, and a little breathing space.

You do not need to wait until you are running on empty before booking. And I speak from experience here - that strategy is never going to end well! Your body deserves care before it starts shouting at you.

If you hold tension in your neck, shoulders, or back

If you regularly feel tension in your neck, shoulders, or back, you may benefit from booking massage more consistently.

This is especially common if you work at a desk, use a laptop, drive a lot, lift children, carry bags, sleep awkwardly, or hold stress in your upper body.

For ongoing general tension, many people find that booking every two to four weeks works well. This gives your body regular attention without leaving too long between treatments.

This may suit you if:

  • Your shoulders often feel tight

  • Your back feels heavy or stiff

  • You spend long hours sitting or driving

  • You clench your jaw or hold stress in your neck

  • Tension returns quickly after treatment

  • You prefer focused work on specific areas

A deep tissue massage may be suitable if you prefer firmer pressure and want more focused work. A Swedish massage may be better if your body responds well to a gentler approach.

Sometimes the best treatment is a combination: calming massage to help your body settle, with deeper work on areas that need more attention.

If you are very busy or caring for others

Many women are constantly giving their time and energy to other people.

You may be caring for children, supporting family members, managing work, running a home, dealing with life admin, and keeping track of everyone else’s needs. Your own body can become something you only notice when it starts hurting or feeling exhausted.

If this sounds familiar, booking massage every four to six weeks can be a realistic starting point.

This gives you a regular appointment that is just for you, without feeling too difficult to maintain.

This may suit you if:

  • You rarely stop

  • You often feel tired or tense

  • You find it hard to prioritise yourself

  • You want regular time away from responsibilities

  • You feel guilty taking time for yourself

  • You need something easy to fit around home life

With mobile massage, the appointment takes place in your own home, so you do not need to add travel, parking, or extra time away from the house. That can make regular treatment much easier to keep up with!

If you are pregnant

Pregnancy massage frequency depends on your stage of pregnancy, how you are feeling, and whether massage is suitable for you.

Some women book occasional pregnancy massage when they feel they need support and rest. Others prefer more regular appointments as pregnancy progresses, especially if they are feeling tired, heavy, tense, or uncomfortable.

A common rhythm may be every four weeks in the second trimester, then every two to three weeks later in pregnancy if appropriate and if you feel it helps you rest.

Pregnancy massage may suit you if:

  • You would like gentle, supportive treatment

  • Your back, shoulders, hips, or legs feel tired

  • You want time to rest before your baby arrives

  • You feel physically or emotionally stretched

  • You want a treatment adapted to pregnancy

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, complications, recent concerns, or you are unsure whether massage is suitable, please check with your midwife, GP, or healthcare provider before booking.

If you are recovering from stress or burnout

If you have been through a stressful period, your body may not relax just because the stressful event is over.

Many women notice that after a difficult time, they still feel tense, tired, wired, emotional, or disconnected from their body. Massage can offer a calm space to slow down and receive care, but it should be part of a wider approach to looking after yourself.

For stress, overwhelm, or burnout recovery, a massage every two to four weeks may feel supportive for a while. After that, you may choose to move to monthly maintenance.

Treatments that may suit you include:

The aim here is not to force relaxation. The aim is to give your body a safe, quiet space where it does not have to keep bracing.

If you are living with or recovering after cancer treatment

Oncology massage should always be approached with care, but it can be a gentle, soothing opportunity to relax if you are in a position to receive it.

If you are living with cancer, receiving treatment, or recovering after treatment, your massage will be adapted in terms of pressure, positioning, treatment length, and areas worked.

How often you book will depend on your needs, energy levels, treatment stage, medical advice, and how your body responds.

Some people may prefer occasional gentle sessions. Others may find regular adapted treatments helpful for relaxation and emotional support where massage is appropriate.

Before booking oncology massage, it is important to share relevant health information with me and check with your oncology team or healthcare provider if you are unsure whether massage is suitable for you.

This is not about pushing a routine. It is about safe, gentle, respectful care.

If you want massage as maintenance

Some women book massage even when nothing feels especially wrong.

Applause please! That is a very sensible thing to do!

You do not have to wait until your shoulders are solid, your back aches, or your stress levels are ridiculous before doing something kind for your body.

Maintenance massage is about regular care.

For many people, this means booking every four to six weeks. That rhythm can help you stay connected to how your body feels and prevent self-care from becoming something you only reach for when you are already depleted.

Maintenance massage may suit you if:

  • You want regular time for yourself

  • You like having something calming in your diary

  • You know your body benefits from routine

  • You want to manage general tension before it builds up

  • You see massage as part of your wellbeing rather than a rare treat

This is often the most realistic long-term rhythm for busy women.

If you are booking a facial treatment

Facial treatments can be booked occasionally or as part of a regular routine.

Some women book a facial when they want to feel refreshed, calm, and cared for. Others prefer regular treatments every four to six weeks.

A facial may be a lovely choice if you want:

  • Gentle relaxation

  • Skin-focused care

  • Time to yourself

  • A calming treatment that does not involve full-body massage

  • A quiet reset at home

Facials can also work well alongside massage, depending on the treatments available.

Should you book weekly massage?

Weekly massage may be helpful for some people for a short period, but it is not necessary for everyone.

For most women, weekly appointments are difficult to sustain in terms of time, energy, and cost. If the routine is unrealistic, it will probably collapse after a few weeks.

A better approach is to choose a frequency you can actually maintain.

For many clients, that means:

  • Every two weeks for more regular support

  • Every three to four weeks for ongoing tension or stress

  • Every four to six weeks for maintenance

  • Occasionally when you need a reset

Consistency matters more than ambition.

How to know when it is time to book again

Your body will usually give you clues!

It may be time to book another massage if:

  • Your shoulders are creeping up towards your ears

  • Your back feels heavy or tense

  • You feel tired and run down

  • You are struggling to switch off

  • You notice jaw, neck, or head tension

  • You keep thinking, “I really need to book a massage”

  • You feel disconnected from your body

  • You are waiting until you are desperate

That last one is worth noticing. If you always wait until you are desperate, you are leaving it too long.

What if you’re not sure?

If you are unsure how often to book, start simple.

Book one treatment and see how you feel afterwards. Notice how long the benefits seem to last for you. Pay attention to when tension starts to return or when you begin feeling like you need another appointment.

From there, you can choose a rhythm that feels right.

You don’t need to commit to a strict schedule immediately. Some women like to book their next appointment before I leave, so they know it is in the diary. Others prefer to get in touch when they feel ready.

Both are fine!

Suggested booking guide

As a general guide:

  • For occasional relaxation: book as needed

  • For regular self-care: every four to six weeks

  • For desk-related tension: every two to four weeks

  • For busy mums or carers: every four to six weeks

  • For ongoing stress: every two to four weeks for a short period, then monthly

  • For pregnancy massage: every four weeks, or more often later in pregnancy if appropriate

  • For facial treatments: every four to six weeks or as desired

  • For oncology massage: frequency should be adapted carefully to your individual situation

This is only a guide. Your treatment plan should always be based on your needs, comfort, health, and lifestyle.
