How to prepare for your first mobile massage appointment
Feeling unsure before your first mobile massage?
If you have booked your first mobile massage appointment, or you are thinking about booking one, it is completely normal to have questions.
You might wonder how much space you need, what you should wear, whether your home is suitable, or what actually happens when the therapist arrives.
Many women feel a little nervous before their first appointment, especially if they have not had massage before or have never invited a therapist into their home. That is completely understandable! Massage is personal, and you should feel comfortable, respected, and informed from the beginning.
At Suffolk Massage Therapy, my aim is to make your appointment feel calm, friendly, and straightforward. You do not need a perfect house, a silent room, or any previous massage experience. A little preparation can help you feel more relaxed, but the process does not need to be complicated.
This guide explains how to prepare for your first mobile massage appointment with me - Sarah Kelleway at Suffolk Massage Therapy.
1. Choose a warm, comfortable room
The first thing to think about is where your treatment will take place.
A warm, quiet room is ideal. It does not need to look like a spa or treatment salon. It simply needs to feel comfortable enough for you to relax.
Good options might include:
A living room
A bedroom
A spare room
A private home office
A calm space with enough floor area
The room should be warm enough for you to feel comfortable during the treatment, especially as you may be lying still for a while. If your home tends to be cool, it can help to put the heating on before your appointment. However, I do have a heated mat and blanket for clients to help them stay toasty on colder days!
You may also want to close curtains or blinds to create an extra sense of privacy.
2. Clear enough space for the massage couch
For most mobile massage or facial treatments, I will bring a massage couch with me.
You will need enough clear floor space for the couch to be set up safely, with room around it so I can move properly during the treatment.
You do not need to rearrange your whole house. Just move anything that could get in the way, such as small tables, laundry baskets, toys, bags, or chairs.
As a rough guide, it helps to have enough space for:
The massage couch
Space for me to walk around it
A small area for my trolley, where I keep oils, towels, and treatment products
Somewhere for you to place clothes, jewellery, or personal items
If you are not sure whether your space will work, please ask before your appointment. Most homes can be made suitable with a little adjustment.
3. Do not worry about having a perfect home
This is important: your home does not need to be spotless!
Many women feel pressure to clean, tidy, and make everything look perfect before someone visits. Please do not turn your massage appointment into another source of stress.
I am not coming to inspect your home. I am coming to provide your treatment!
Real homes have washing, pets, children’s things, work bags, mugs, shoes by the door, and everyday life happening in the background. That is normal.
And if it makes you feel better, it sounds like a perfect description of my home as I write this blogpost!
As long as there is a safe, clear space for the couch and you feel comfortable, that is enough.
4. Think about privacy and interruptions
Massage is easier to enjoy when you know you are unlikely to be interrupted.
Before your appointment, it can help to let anyone else at home know that you are having a treatment and would like some quiet time. If possible, choose a room where you can close the door.
You may want to:
Put your phone on silent
Let family members know not to disturb you
Arrange pets in another room if needed
Avoid booking too close to school runs or work calls
Give yourself a little buffer time afterwards
Of course, home life is not always perfectly quiet. Doorbells ring. Children need things. Dogs bark. That does not ruin the appointment. We can work with real life.
But giving yourself the best chance of an uninterrupted treatment can help you settle more easily.
5. Wear comfortable clothing before and after
Before your appointment, wear something comfortable and easy to change out of.
You do not need to dress up. This is not that kind of appointment!
Loose, comfortable clothes are ideal, especially for after your treatment. Many women like to put on soft clothes, a dressing gown, or something warm and relaxed once the massage is finished. If it’s close to bedtime, just get straight in your pyjamas! And please know, I am NEVER someone to judge a comfy clothing choice.
During the treatment, I will explain what you need to do and give you privacy to get ready. You will be covered appropriately throughout the massage, with only the area being worked on uncovered at the time.
Your comfort and dignity matter throughout the appointment.
6. Remove jewellery if possible
It is helpful to remove jewellery before your treatment, especially necklaces, bracelets, watches, or large earrings.
This makes it easier for me to work around areas such as the neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. It also means you are not lying on anything uncomfortable.
If you forget, don’t worry! You can remove items before the treatment begins and place them somewhere safe nearby.
7. Avoid eating a heavy meal just before treatment
Try not to eat a large, heavy meal immediately before your massage.
You do not need to arrive hungry, but lying down for a treatment can feel uncomfortable if you have just eaten a lot. A light meal or snack beforehand is usually fine.
It is also a good idea to drink some water before and after your appointment. You do not need to overthink this. Just aim to be comfortably hydrated.
8. Think about what you want from the treatment
Before your appointment, take a moment to think about why you are booking.
You do not need a perfect answer, but it can help to consider:
Are you looking to relax?
Are you feeling stressed or overwhelmed?
Do you have tension in your neck, shoulders, or back?
Would you prefer gentle, medium, or firmer pressure?
Are there any areas you would like me to avoid?
Are you pregnant, recovering from illness, or receiving medical care?
Do you have any injuries, sensitivities, or health conditions I should know about?
The more I understand, the better I can adapt the treatment to suit you.
If you are unsure, that is fine too. We can talk it through together before the massage begins.
9. Be honest about your health and comfort
Before treatment, I will ask some questions about your general health and wellbeing. This is not to be intrusive. It is to make sure massage is suitable and safe for you.
Please let me know if you:
Are pregnant
Have recently had surgery
Are receiving medical treatment
Have cancer or a history of cancer
Have a recent injury
Have a skin condition, infection, or unexplained swelling
Have a heart condition or circulation issue
Are taking medication that may affect treatment
Feel unwell on the day
There may be times when massage needs to be adapted, postponed, or avoided. That is not a problem. It is simply part of working safely and professionally.
If you are unsure whether massage is suitable for you, please check with your GP, midwife, oncology team, or healthcare provider before booking.
10. Say what pressure you prefer
You are allowed to have preferences.
Some women love firm pressure. Others prefer something gentle and calming. Some want deeper work in one area but lighter pressure elsewhere.
There is no correct answer.
During your appointment, please tell me if the pressure feels too firm, too light, or not quite right. I would much rather adjust the treatment than have you lie there feeling uncomfortable!
Massage should not feel like something you have to endure. Even deep tissue work should feel controlled, appropriate, and within your comfort level.
11. Give yourself time afterwards
One of the best things about mobile massage is that you do not have to drive home afterwards.
Try to avoid rushing straight into chores, emails, school runs, or another appointment if you can. Even ten quiet minutes after your massage can help you enjoy the benefits of the treatment more fully.
After your appointment, you may want to:
Drink some water
Sit quietly for a few minutes
Put on comfortable clothes
Avoid rushing straight back to work
Have a gentle evening if possible
Notice how your body feels
This is your time. Let yourself have it.
12. Ask questions if you need to
If you feel nervous or unsure, please ask!
You might want to know:
What happens when I arrive?
What should I wear?
How much space do I need?
Will I be covered during the treatment?
Can I choose the pressure?
What if I feel uncomfortable?
Is massage suitable for me?
Which treatment should I book?
These are all normal questions. You do not need to feel embarrassed about asking them.
With Suffolk Massage Therapy, I want you to feel informed, comfortable, and reassured before your treatment begins.
What will Sarah bring to the appointment?
For your mobile massage appointment, I will bring the equipment needed for your treatment.
This may include:
A professional massage couch
Couch covers
Towels or linens, depending on the treatment
Massage oils, waxes, or treatment products
Any relevant equipment for your chosen treatment
If there is anything specific you need to provide, I will let you know when you book.
What if you feel nervous?
Feeling nervous before your first massage is very common.
You might feel unsure about having treatment at home, worried about what to wear, or self-conscious about your body. Please know that you do not need to look a certain way, have a certain body type, or feel completely confident before booking a massage.
If it makes you feel any better, I went along to my last massage with stubbly legs as I hadn’t shaved for 4 days, my permanent love handles (as it’s tricky to leave them at home), and hair which was crying out for a wash. Did my therapist mind? Not at all!
Actually, it’s better not to wash your hair before a massage as you’re likely to end up with oil in it anyway…
Your body does not need to be “fixed” before it deserves care.
A professional massage treatment should feel respectful, calm, and safe. I will guide you through what to expect, and you can ask for adjustments at any point.
