Which massage or treatment is right for you?
Not sure which treatment to book?
If you know you would like a treatment but are not sure which one to choose, you are not alone!
Many women get to the booking stage and pause because they are unsure what their body needs. Should you choose something relaxing? Something deeper? A warming treatment? A facial? A shorter treatment focused on the head, neck, and shoulders? Something gentle and supportive during pregnancy or after illness?
The answer depends on how you feel, what you want from the appointment, and what feels right for your body at the time.
At Suffolk Massage Therapy, all my treatments are designed to feel calm, friendly, and personal. You do not need to know the perfect treatment before you get in touch. If you are unsure, I can help you choose!
However, if you’d like to learn more by yourself, this guide explains the main options so you can feel more confident before booking.
Swedish massage: for relaxation and switching off
Swedish massage is often a lovely choice if you want to relax, unwind, and give your body a chance to soften.
This is a calming, flowing massage that usually uses lighter to medium pressure. It can help you feel more settled, less tense, and more connected to your body. It is a good option if you are feeling tired, stressed, emotionally drained, or simply in need of quiet time.
Swedish massage may be right for you if:
You want a relaxing treatment
You are new to massage
You prefer lighter or medium pressure
You feel stressed or overwhelmed
You want a full-body treatment
You need time to pause and breathe
You do not want anything too intense
This treatment is ideal if your main goal is relaxation rather than deep work on specific areas of tension.
For many women, Swedish massage is a good place to start.
Deep tissue massage: for firmer, more focused work
Deep tissue massage may be a better choice if you prefer firmer pressure and want more focused work on areas of tension.
This type of massage is often chosen by women who hold tightness in the neck, shoulders, back, hips, or legs. It can be especially helpful if you spend long hours at a desk, carry stress in your shoulders, or feel generally tight and uncomfortable.
Deep tissue massage does not mean the treatment should be painful. That is a common misunderstanding. Strong pressure can be useful, but your body should not feel as though it is being forced. The pressure should always be adjusted to suit you.
Deep tissue massage may be right for you if:
You prefer firmer pressure
You have specific areas of muscle tension
Your shoulders, back, or neck feel tight
You want a more focused treatment
You do not want a purely relaxation-based massage
You are comfortable giving feedback during the treatment
If you are unsure whether deep tissue is right for you, we can discuss this before your appointment. Sometimes a combination of relaxing massage and firmer work is the best approach.
Lava Shells massage: for warmth, comfort, and deep relaxation
Lava Shells massage is a warming treatment that uses heated porcelain clam shells to help create a deeply comforting experience.
The warmth can feel soothing, especially if you are tired, tense, or craving something nurturing. What’s more, it can increase the effect of your massage by up to 300%! Many women choose Lava Shells massage when they want relaxation but would like something a little more indulgent than a standard massage.
This treatment can feel especially lovely during colder months or when your body feels stiff, tired, or in need of comfort.
Lava shells massage may be right for you if:
You enjoy warmth during treatment
You want something deeply relaxing
You feel tired or run down
You prefer a nurturing treatment
You want to ease into relaxation
You are looking for something calming and comforting
Lava shells may not be suitable for everyone, particularly if you have certain health conditions or heat sensitivity. If you are unsure, please ask before booking.
Pregnancy massage: for comfort and calm during pregnancy
Pregnancy can be a beautiful time, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding.
As your body changes, you may experience areas of tension, tiredness, heaviness, or discomfort. You may also simply want time to rest and feel cared for.
Pregnancy massage is adapted to support your comfort during this stage. Positioning, pressure, and treatment style are all adjusted carefully, with your safety and ease in mind.
Pregnancy massage may be right for you if:
You are pregnant and would like a gentle, supportive treatment
You feel tired or physically uncomfortable
You are holding tension in your back, shoulders, hips, or legs
You want time to relax before your baby arrives
You would like a calm treatment adapted to pregnancy
Pregnancy massage should always be carried out with appropriate care and is only suitable from 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, complications, or any concerns, please speak to your midwife, GP, or healthcare provider before booking.
Indian head massage: for the head, neck, shoulders, and mind
Indian head massage is a focused treatment that usually works around the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp, and face.
It can be a good option if you carry stress in your shoulders, clench your jaw, spend long hours at a screen, or feel mentally overloaded. Many women choose Indian head massage when they do not want a full-body treatment but still want to feel calmer and more at ease.
This treatment can be especially appealing if you are short on time or prefer to remain seated, depending on how the treatment is offered. You can receive an Indian head massage while lying on the treatment couch, or seated in a low-backed chair.
Indian head massage may be right for you if:
Your shoulders and neck feel tense
Your head feels busy or overloaded
You spend a lot of time at a computer
You want a shorter, focused treatment
You prefer not to have a full-body massage
You enjoy scalp, neck, and shoulder work
It is a simple but effective choice when you need to step away from the noise of the day.
Oncology massage: gentle support during or after cancer treatment
Oncology massage is a gentle, carefully adapted treatment for people who are living with cancer, going through cancer treatment, or recovering after treatment.
This is not a standard massage with a different name. It needs a thoughtful, informed approach. Pressure, positioning, treatment length, and areas worked may all need to be adapted depending on your situation, treatment history, energy levels, scars, lymph node removal, medication, and how you are feeling on the day.
The aim is not to “fix” or make medical claims. The aim is to offer safe, gentle, supportive touch where appropriate.
Oncology massage may be right for you if:
You are living with cancer
You are going through or recovering from treatment
You would like gentle, calming support
You feel anxious, tired, or disconnected from your body
You want a treatment that is adapted with care
You have been advised that massage is suitable for you
If you are currently receiving cancer treatment, have recently had surgery, or have any concerns, please check with your oncology team or healthcare provider before booking. I will also ask for relevant information before treatment so the appointment can be adapted safely.
Facial treatments: for relaxation, skin care, and time for yourself
Facial treatments can be a lovely choice if you want something calming, gentle, and restorative without having a full-body massage.
A facial gives you time to slow down while focusing on the face, neck, and upper chest area. It can feel soothing if you are tired, stressed, or simply want to feel refreshed.
Facial treatments may be right for you if:
You want a relaxing treatment
You have skin problems that can be improved with prescriptive products
You enjoy gentle touch
Your face or jaw feels tense
You want time to feel refreshed
You prefer not to have a full-body massage
You would like a calming treatment focused on your face and skin
Facials can be a good option on their own or combined with another treatment (please note that I offer a reduced rate on facials when booked with another treatment!).
Which treatment should you choose?
If you are still unsure, here is a simple way to think about it.
Choose Swedish massage if you want to relax, unwind, and switch off.
Choose deep tissue massage if you want firmer pressure and focused work on areas of tension.
Choose lava shells massage if you want warmth, comfort, and deep relaxation.
Choose pregnancy massage if you are pregnant and would like a treatment adapted to support your comfort.
Choose Indian head massage if your tension is mainly around your head, neck, shoulders, scalp, or jaw.
Choose oncology massage if you need a gentle, carefully adapted treatment during or after cancer care, where massage is suitable for you.
Choose a facial treatment if you want a calming, skin-focused treatment that helps you feel refreshed and cared for.
Can treatments be adapted?
Yes. In many cases, your appointment can be adapted around what you need.
You may book a relaxing massage but ask for a little more focus on the shoulders. You may want deep tissue work in one area but gentler pressure elsewhere. You may feel tired on the day and prefer something softer than you originally planned.
That is completely fine!
Your treatment should not feel rigid. It should respond to how you feel, what your body needs, and what is appropriate for you on the day.
What if you feel nervous about booking?
It is very normal to feel unsure before booking a treatment, especially if it is your first time having massage at home.
You might wonder what to choose, what to wear, whether your home is suitable, or whether you will feel comfortable. These are all reasonable questions.
At Suffolk Massage Therapy, my aim is to make the experience feel friendly, respectful, and reassuring from the start. You can ask questions before booking, and we can talk through what would suit you best.
